Raymond Cruz X Galerie Anna
Galerie Anna presents Fragments of Thought
Eddie Santillan, Raymond Cruz, Tao Butao and Valerie Teng
September 10 – 24, 2024

“Lost Pieces,” a part of Galerie Anna’s Fragments of Thought, delves into the dynamic tension between presence and absence in a world seemingly detached from linear time. Through fragmented abstract forms, layered textures, simplicity, and subtle nuances, I seek to explore the essence of lost fragments and their influence on shaping my understanding of self and surroundings. The process of assembling these disparate elements mirrors the act of piecing together personal history, embodying both playful experimentation and meditative reflection. This series of works serves as a metaphor for my artistic exploration—a quest to find meaning within the interplay of absence and presence. By distilling elements to their core, I strive to reveal the raw essence of existence, inviting viewers into an introspective space where they can find contemplation amidst the noise and distraction of everyday life. In presenting these minimal forms, I offer a sanctuary for quiet reflection and deeper understanding, laying bare both my personal narrative and the universal search for meaning.

LIFE

Raymond Cruz
Raymond Cruz, a Filipino with a mixed heritage of Bulakeño and Ilocano, developed a deep passion for art and punk/hardcore music. From his early years in Malolos to his current residence in Rizal, his journey was shaped by a profound appreciation for these creative expressions. In 2000, immediately after graduating, he began his artistic career as a graphic artist. Raymond is the co-owner of redlab*, a specialized fineart printing studio in the Philippines that focuses on giclée printing, reproduction, and custom framing since 2015. Raymond showcases his work in group exhibitions and art fairs, with pieces residing in private collections and permanently displayed at The Archbishop’s Palace in Batangas City and Sofitel Manila. One of his work was selected for the Ateneo Art Gallery – Marciano Galang Acquisition Prize exhibition in 2020, Raymond had his debut solo exhibit at Art Elaan. He draws inspiration from Eastern artistic principles, particularly the “concept of ma” and “abstraction.” His artistic practice includes printmaking, photography, mixed media, and painting, enabling him to explore diverse mediums to express his artistic vision.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Beauty lies not in the intricacies of complexity, but in the elegant simplicity that resonates with the depths of our souls.”

I delve into the allure of space, mystery, impermanence, and the unexpressed aspects of existence. The interplay between technical mastery and embracing the unknown is at the core of my creative process. Central to the aesthetics of abstraction and deep appreciation for minimalism, rooted in contemplative practice influenced by Zen.

I embrace the expressive power of neutral tones, forging a profound connection with the mysterious depths of the subconscious mind. In my creative journey—painting, sculpture, and photography—I integrate my responses to the world, encompassing emotions, sights, sounds, and experiences that shape my perception.
