Quiet Contemplation
Art Elaan presents Quiet Contemplation
A solo exhibit by Raymond Cruz
March 31, 2023

“Quiet Contemplation” explores the bond between non-representation and a sense of emptiness as a means of shaping ideas and context. The works are monochromatic, minimalist, and muted representing silence and the reflections of the soul, out of bliss in the clarity of the mind and absence of noise. The artist focused on questioning the spatial relations and interactions between the negative space and elements. The exhibit invites the viewer to look at the self and inner self through introspection and a way of seeing between intangible spirits, enlightenment, truth, and the entirety of the universe with its interpretation left to the individual. It seeks to uncover the complexity of layers by creating sculptural forms and associating them with narratives that lie within the consciousness.

LIFE

Raymond Cruz
Raymond Tesoro Cruz, a Filipino with a mixed heritage of Bulakeño and Ilocano, developed a deep passion for art and punk/hardcore music. From his early years in Malolos to his current residence in Rizal, his journey was shaped by a profound appreciation for these creative expressions. In 2000, immediately after graduating, he began his artistic career as a graphic artist, drawing inspiration from distinguished Swiss Graphic designers. Expanding his repertoire, he embarked on a photography journey in 2003, acquiring his first camera and immersing himself in fine art photography.

In 2010, he began teaching photography; it was never in his plans. However, life took an unexpected turn, and he found himself naturally drawn to sharing his knowledge and inspiring others in the field. Despite the initial surprise, he discovered a deep sense of fulfillment in guiding aspiring photographers, positively impacting their creative journeys.

I2013, he ventured into the meticulous craft of printmaking. In 2015, he co-founded redlab*, a highly specialized print studio in the Philippines. This endeavor provided him with a platform to utilize his expertise and offer exceptional printing services to fellow artists. While painting came much later in his life, it became a powerful means for him to explore his innermost thoughts, emotions, and perspectives, allowing him to communicate and connect with others on a deeper level. Through brushstrokes and textures, he found a language that transcended words, leaving an enduring legacy in his artistic endeavors. Raymond is a contemporary artist inspired by the aesthetic principles of Eastern Art, the Concept of Ma, and Abstract Expressionism. He works with various mediums — including printmaking, mixed media, and painting.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Beauty lies not in the intricacies of complexity, but in the elegant simplicity that resonates with the depths of our souls.”

I delve into the allure of space, mystery, impermanence, and the unexpressed aspects of existence. The interplay between technical mastery and embracing the unknown is at the core of my creative process. Central to the aesthetics of abstraction and deep appreciation for minimalism, rooted in contemplative practice influenced by Zen.

I embrace the expressive power of monochromatic tones, forging a profound connection with the mysterious depths of the subconscious mind. In my creative journey—painting, sculpture, and photography—I integrate my responses to the world, encompassing emotions, sights, sounds, and experiences that shape my perception.
